MLB 2010 and Beyond

I know what you're thinking, Mr. Law it is December and baseball is the last thing on my mind as I wrap and then unwrap Christmas presents. But hey, the first and most important wave of free agency has come and gone and one thing is for certain, things are changing.

For the first time in about a billion years, not one marquee free agent signed with the "evil empire" New York Yankees. Cliff Lee not only said no to the NY but he flamboyantly told them their money was no good to him like the last time I tried to use Monopoly money at McDonald's. For those of you that have completely ignored the MLB since the World Series ended and the San Francisco Giants took it all (Thanks to this man and his friend The Machine)

Cliff Lee took $30 Million less or only a meager $120 Million from the Philadelphia Phillies as opposed to joining his good friend C.C. "Big Cheese" Sabathia on the Yankees staff. following in Lee's foot steps were the rest of the 2010 free agent class sans Russell Martin and the random 19 year old that obviously had dirt on the entire Steinbrenner family. This seems to be a trend that could catch on over the next couple years. The Yankees are not the same championship buying team from the nineties that would show up at FA's houses and make it rain more than "Pacman" Jones in just about every strip club in the continental U.S. and parts of Guam.

But is this really the beginning of the end of teams "buying" their way into the playoffs? Doubtful. Until some sort of salary cap is put into place (I won't hold my breath) I have a feeling this is just an off year for NY. But only time till tell. Not that "The Boss" is no longer with us or the NY Yankees it will be very interesting to see how business will change.
